Do you think your school was a scam?

Lots of people feel bad about their experiences at school, especially at for-profit schools.  But, how can you know if the school misled you in a way that gives you a way to get even?

For starters, “misled” is the right word.  If the school said something that wasn’t true, or that gave you a false impression – that everyone graduates, that their placement rates were very high, that their courses prepared you for particular jobs, that externships were arranged and waiting, or that their admissions process was highly selective, just for some examples – then you have may have a claim.  Were these things said by a recruiter or salesperson for the school?  Were any of them in writing?  Were they important to your decision to attend?  The more “yes” answers you give, the more likely you have a claim.

What if you only learned these things after you completed your program?  Generally, if you act within the statute of limitations (usually 1-3 years), this isn’t a problem.  Many people don’t learn that their school misled them until they are done with the school and in the working world looking for a job.  It’s amazing how much you can learn about the value of a particular degree or certificate from an employer who actually hires people from the school.

What can you get if your school misled you?  The best result for you is probably the return of the money you spent there, and cancellation of the loans you took to go to the school.  You may have to sue the school, and even the lender, to get these things, but this would be a great victory.  You could turn the page and move on with your life, free of crippling student debt.

So, if you think you were lied to, defrauded or misled by your school, especially if it was a for-profit school, ask yourself some of these questions.  If the answers make you think you may have a claim, contact us or other qualified attorneys.  We are here to help.

I went to Heald College San jose,2005 and graduated 2008 (I was going part time). I started paying my loan back (instructed through Heald) to Citibank, also gave a Cal grant of $4000 which I was told would be applied to my loan, after paying from 2009 to 2013 approx $2000 my income tax was taken and I was threated by school government my wages were to be garnished, after submitting all documents where I had paid to Citibank I am now on a repayment loan for ten months. When I asked the student government why were they doing this they informed me they did not receive anything and looking on the NSLDS website this was true, so all the money I spent $2000 and a $4000 Cal grant was never put towards my loan also all my loans had went into default. Please help me to get satisfaction and so this wont happen to any one else. I would greatly appreciate it.
